Getting to Holbox:
Holbox is 2 hours from Cancun airport.
We used Holbox Shuttle from Cancun airport to Chiquila where the ferry leaves from. It’s about a 2 hour drive on toll roads and then through some small towns until Chiquila. We bought our ferry tickets from the stand, grabbed a few corononitas and waited with locals and tourist to get on the ferry. Since it was dark by the time we got on the ferry we couldn’t see much for the 30 min ferry ride but it was a mostly smooth and easy ride. Once you arrive to Holbox there is a line of golf cart taxis (no cars on Holbox!) to take you to your hotel.
Where to stay in Holbox:
The island is small so you don’t need to worry much about location. It’s easy to walk, bike or get golf cart taxis from anywhere. Staying on the beach side is obviously preferable
We stayed at Aldea Kuka. It was a great location walking distance (or golf car taxi) into town. They have a restaurant, beach bar, yoga. The rooms were very nice but it is an eco lodge (on an island in Mexico so adjust your expectations) so hot showers were more warm than hot and the walls were pretty thin so bring ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper. A delicious daily breakfast was included.
Other hotels:
If you prefer bigger and less eco vibes then the new Margaritaville Hotel or Villas HM Palapas del Mar is probably for you.
Use booking.com to find other accommodations. Holbox is growing and new hotels are popping up!
Where to eat in Holbox:
Eat at Luuma. Favorite meal on the island.
Other recommendations: Here is my map of all saved Holbox spots.
Roots Pizzas not the best pizza in the world but sometimes you just need some pizza after all the tacos.

Drink on the bar swings at Sunset Bar

Mangos everywhere. You won’t taste such sweet and juicy mangos anywhere else! Plus they get them into a flower for easy eating. The most perfect beach snack.

The burrito man! I was a little concerned for my stomach when I saw the burrito man carrying a case of chicken burritos in the hot, humid heat up and down the beach but l decided to risk it and so glad I did! The most delicious, simple $3 beach burrito you will ever have and then probably need to track him down again for another one. Ps. did not get sick at all.
What to do in Holbox:

Rent bikes and explore the island. There are bike rental spots all over. Head to Playa Punta Cocos and grab a cervesa from the beach bar. Check out the bay Bike around the streets and stumble upon beach bars like La Puerta Azul or Cafe del Mar.
Sandbar walk
You can go for about a 30 min sandbar walk to Punta Mosquito. It’s easy to see where it starts in front of Las Nubas Hotel and you’ll see many other people start the trek . It’s pretty cool to be walking in the middle of the ocean. Go in the morning before it gets too hot. Bring water and maybe a snack and beverage to have a little picnic on the beach when you get to the end before you turn around. Depending on the tide there are areas that the water may be up to your thighs so plan accordingly.
It’s very lively in the evenings around the main square. Locals are playing intense soccer games, there are food stands and kids games and music all around!
You’re in Mexico! On an island! Eat, drink, relax, swim!
